Shangwai 上外 organized a number of excursions for the foreign students. One of the first was to Fuxing Park where celebrations were held in anticipation of the 35th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. The park appeared very different from Hongkou Park (Hongkou gongyuan 虹口公園; Lu Xun Park (Lu Xun gongyuan 魯迅公園) since 1988) and ‘felt’ European. This had probably to do with its origins as a park in the former French concession of Shanghai. In addition, the atmosphere that day was as relaxed as it could be in Shanghai. Below are just a few impressions. There was even an old pinball machine (sorry, no picture; I wonder where that machine may have come from) that counted single points, and our teachers were delighted that my room mate managed to establish the high score.
