The present article examines critically the claim made by Oliver W. Wolters in 1966 about a shift of the capital of Sanfoqi (most likely southeastern Sumatra) from Palembang to Jambi between 1079-1082 based on his reading and interpreting of several premodern Chinese sources. A reexamination of the same texts reveals that they, by no means, allow to trace a change of capital, but that instead preconceived ideas affected the interpretation of the source material. Consequently, the idea of a capital of Jambi in Sumatra in the late eleventh century cannot be verified.
